    The fall-off you describe is true...but it is in some ways a healthy elimination. We don't need vast numbers of people in these fields. That is an urban legend. What we need is a critical mass of Americans in these fields. I have a Ph.D. from an upper tier (though not ivy) school in microbiology and immunology. I went through the early elimination process and had 15 years in the field as a researcher. I left the field because the of abusive nature of the work."We'll pay for 35 hours but you work 70" and the absolutely piss poor pay for the 35 hours you were paid for. I was tired of working myself to death in grinding poverty. The field had turned from a viable career path to an endless indenture.

    I just wrote a basic blog about STEM careers and why they aren't working for those who make it through the pipeline. Quite honestly in this case the cheese wasn't moved it was destroyed.
